The Panasonic VIERA TC-P60ST50 offers a lot of high definition bang for a reasonable amount of buck – offering the picture quality and blacks of a set that would seemingly cost several hundred dollars more. Combine the strong performance with all the other bells and whistles (apps, web browser and wifi) and you have a television set that will meet the picture quality standards of the family videophile while also satisfying the teens who want a tv to be at least as connected as their cell phones.
One of my buddies just pick up the 60 inch version recently and I helped him set it up – he had an existing frame so it was just a matter of us hoisting it up there. Setting everything up was pretty simple and there should be more than enough HDMI inputs (3) to satisfy a variety of incoming signals other than just the satellite or cable signal. His tv is running Dish Network and the high definition channels looked great to us – on sporting events we didn’t notice any lagging/fragmenting issues as some folks had noted in earlier reviews. We threw in Batman Begins on Blu-Ray and the picture looked fantastic both in grim and gritty Gotham as well as during the training sequences in the snowbound mountains. We had decided to wait on hooking up his receiver and surround sound system, and I must say that the built-in speakers were pretty impressive as well. We did not get to try the 3D functionality yet because the glasses had not arrived, I will hopefully post an update to this in the near future.
As for the internet connectivity and apps, they were pretty impressive. Response time for the interface is not as immediate as on a phone or computer, but is reasonable, and the apps themselves work pretty well (I assume future browsers will be a bit more robust). There are apps where you can control the television from your iPhone or Android device, but they hadn’t downloaded all that stuff yet. The only minor complaint was the well-known buzzing sound that emanates from many Panasonic panels. All in all it is a great blend of performance and value for those in the market for a new flatscreen television.
